Increase Revenue and Margins at Your Critical Access Hospital.

Swing Bed: By the Numbers for Critical Access Hospitals

  • Utilizing swing beds reduces the Medicare costs per patient bed day AND increases revenues and margins to support population health, wellness, and other services. This can offset the shrinking inpatient census which shows the average daily census in CAHs across the country is under four.
  • A successful swing bed initiative means developing a regional program based on diagnosis-specific admissions and not being dependent on a couple of referral hospitals for patients.
  • Financial considerations consider staffing issues and understanding the value of skilled nursing staffing ratios vs. acute.
  • Financial gains are more likely when program expectations focus on the serving needs of chronic diseases treated in tertiary hospitals.

Super Charge Your Swing Bed Program with HTHU!

The Rural Swing Bed Management Program from HTHU delivers webinars, technical assistance check-ins, and in-person interactive workshops to discuss building and maintaining a swing bed program with measurable financial expectations and quality outcomes. The program is designed to provide interaction with other swing bed program best practices, while also providing individual hospital assistance.

Led by industry expert, Kerry Dunning, alongside Hometown Health’s educational support team, the Rural Swing Bed Management Program includes the following components:

  • Basic Training:  Get new swing bed coordinators and other key staff ready to go.
  • HTHU School of Swing Bed Management Certificate Program: Gain understanding of swing bed foundations and learn proven best practices for program implementation.
  • Track and Measure: Learn how to develop a Dashboard for Swing Bed Financial and Operational Measurement to effectively use data daily and track results.
  • Annual Swing Bed Update: Maintain readiness with compliance and regulatory changes.
  • Program of Activities: In this focused training, learn regulations and the intent of activities in swing beds: the value tied to self-appreciation, self-care, leisure time when patients get home, and activities to help patients rest.
  • Marketing: Learn the three areas of marketing: Internal [staff, physicians]; Planning [building a responsible and measurable program]; and, Execution [create a marketing plan with monthly/quarterly goals].
  • Long COVID Continuum of Care: Considering the complexity of COVID patients, Swing Beds can accept patients while working with other health care providers such as RHC, outpatient therapy, PCPs, community resources and provide education to caregivers.
  • Hospital Specific Technical Assistance: Get resources to address hospital-specific issues utilizing one-on-one technical assistance.
