Rural Hospital Privacy & Security Officer Certificate Program

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requires hospitals to identify and designate two important roles within the organization to ensure compliance. The role of a HIPAA Privacy Officer and HIPAA Security Officer are similar in some respects, as both roles are responsible for conducting risk assessments, staff training and managing Business Associate Agreements. In larger organizations, there will typically be a dedicated HIPAA privacy officer and/or Security Officer, however in smaller organizations the role might fall on an employee with administrative or IT responsibilities due to the perception that the integrity of ePHI is an IT issue. However, this is not necessarily the case. It is important to ensure that no matter the individual(s) in these roles, they have a firm foundation of their responsibilities and critical role within a rural hospital.
