This multi-part training series will focus on the Minimum Data Set (MDS) and how it ties into accurate coding in Post-Acute Care settings.

The MDS & ICD-10CM Coding: Part 1

In this course Lisa Pando, an RN Assessment Coordinator (RNAC-CT) and Certified Coding Associate (CCA), covers the MDS (Minimum Data Set) and how it ties into accurate coding for Post Acute Care. She covers Medicare’s intent for diagnoses coding on the MDS as well as RAI guidance for proper coding for rural hospital swing bed programs. Lisa also includes several relevant coding case scenarios to help participants understand and complete the MDS accurately.

Learning Outcomes

• Describe Medicare intent for diagnoses coding on the MDS for Rural Hospital Swing Bed programs, and how this applies to CAH Swing Bed programs.
• Recall key elements of Section I of the MDS.
• Address specificity and uniqueness of skilled nursing diagnoses coding.

The MDS & ICD-10-CM Coding: Part 2

In this course, Lisa Pando, an RN Assessment Coordinator (RNAC-CT) and Certified Coding Associate (CCA) provides a review of part one and then further explores the Medicare intent for diagnoses coding on the MDS. She shows how this applies to CAH swing bed programs and the importance of coding being a team approach. She concludes the course by discussing the importance of using PDPM mappings and grouper tools.
