Behavioral health issues affect millions of adolescents in the United States. Half of all lifetime cases of mental disorders begin by age 14, and about 1 in 4 adolescents experience mental disorders that result in severe impairment. People who have experienced abuse, neglect and other adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) such as living with domestic violence during their childhood are at much greater risk of mental illness throughout life. There are several barriers to behavioral health service utilization for rural adolescents which affect both their decision to access help as well as their ability to engage effectively with behavioral health services over time.

This program will provide small or rural hospitals with information that will identify the current adolescent mental/behavioral health crisis that exists in rural communities. This training is designed to explore tools to reduce social stigma and help hospital leaders engage in community wide efforts to build resilience which can help protect individuals from developing the mental health problems that adverse childhood experiences can cause.
